Shift the Diamond industry
Lucy Calculator ™️
Project overview
In 2020, I worked as the sole designer of Lucy Platforms, an Israeli startup working to shift the diamond industry from an analog and slow one, to a digital-first industry. One of my projects was to design the Lucy Calculator, a mobile app intended to change the analog, paper, and handshake behavior of diamond merchants to a quick, intelligent one.
The challange
The diamond selling hall in the diamond exchange is a fascinating thing to see. Many people, all looking to negotiate the best price for diamonds to buy and sell showcase their merchandise for other buyers to see. Since each diamond has different properties, the price is rarely the same for two diamonds. Every merchant has to carry many papers, text his colleagues on the spot, and deal with a lack of trust in others on a daily basis in this arena. It’s a slow, muddy, and tiring process, which has another layer of challenge which is that this is the agreed culture in this industry for years.
The process
The process included myself, the entrepreneurs, and stakeholders from within the industry. We explored competitors, common themes, and opportunities to improve. Once we established the core solution we agreed on, we also developed a look and feel that tries to combine the industry's natural luxury with a technological feel.
Design principles
Design the App as a “one mission” app, even when other supporting features are built — meaning the main task the app was created for will lead, and the rest is next in the hierarchy level.
Explaining and showcasing the partners, the technology, and the database behind the calculated prices (Social affirmation bias) in a bold but non-intrusive way.
Creating a design system that is aware of the next developments, menus, subheaders, etc.
“Habit” apps are created in a similar pattern — reward first (help the user achieve the main task as fast and as easy as possible), investment next (users will personalize, save or share results) and an external trigger (new prices, more diamonds, etc. are now available in the app notification)
